Energy transition policies accelerate innovative applications of high-voltage complete switchgear sets
Guided by the "dual carbon" goals, China's energy structure is shifting from being dominated by traditional fossil fuels to being dominated by renewable energy, with the construction of a new power system becoming the core task of energy transition. As key equipment in the transmission and distribution network, high-voltage switchgear sets bear the important functions of power distribution, protection, and control. Their technological innovation and application upgrades have become an inevitable choice to meet the demands of energy transition. In recent years, a series of national energy policies, such as the "14th Five-Year Plan for Modern Energy System" and the "Implementation Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development of New Energy in the New Era," have pointed the way for innovative development of high-voltage switchgear from perspectives such as renewable energy grid integration, intelligent distribution networks, and the promotion of low-carbon equipment.
Core demand upgrades driven by policy
Energy transition policies put forward three core demands for high-voltage switchgear:
First, the adaptability of renewable energy grid integration. The proportion of intermittent power sources such as wind and photovoltaic continues to rise, and grid power fluctuations intensify, requiring switchgear to respond quickly and flexibly adjust to ensure grid stability;
Second, the support for intelligent distribution networks. Policies require distribution networks to develop toward automation and self-healing, with switchgear integrating status sensing and remote control functions to enable rapid fault location and self-healing;
Third, the mandatory low-carbon environmental protection. The Montreal Protocol's restrictions on the use of SF6 gas (a strong greenhouse gas) have accelerated the development of SF6-free alternative technologies to reduce carbon emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of equipment.
Key directions for innovative applications
1.Intelligence and digital transformation
Smart switchgear has become the mainstream in the industry. By integrating multidimensional sensors such as temperature, partial discharge, and gas density, operational data is collected in real time and uploaded to the cloud platform via IoT and edge computing to achieve predictive maintenance. For example, in distributed photovoltaic power stations, smart switchgear can monitor grid connection line parameters in real time, quickly identify faults, and automatically disconnect them, reducing unplanned power outages. The application of digital twin technology can also build virtual models of switchgear cabinets, simulate operating conditions to optimize operation and maintenance strategies, and extend equipment lifespan.
2.Environmentally friendly technology alternatives
SF6-free switchgear is an important direction for low-carbon transformation. Currently, SF6-free switchgear at 12kV and 24kV levels has been piloted and implemented, using environmentally friendly media such as dry air, nitrogen, and CF3I mixed gases. Their insulation and arc extinguishing performance rivals traditional SF6 equipment, and their greenhouse effect potential (GWP) is significantly reduced. At the same time, the industry promotes the use of recyclable metal casings and environmentally friendly insulation materials to reduce carbon emissions in production, aligning with the concept of a circular economy.
3.Modular and flexible design
Modular switchgear adapts to distributed energy distribution layouts. Prefabricated compartment-type switchgear shortens construction periods and reduces construction difficulty through standardized factory prefabrication and on-site rapid assembly. For example, in industrial park microgrids, modular switchgear can be flexibly combined, supporting multi-scenario access for photovoltaics, energy storage, and loads. Switchgear with flexible topology can quickly adjust wiring methods, enabling wind power grid connection and energy storage charging and discharge switching, thereby enhancing system flexibility.
4.Optimized new energy adaptation performance
To address the fluctuations of new energy, switchgear has enhanced performance design: on one hand, it improves short-circuit tolerance to cope with short-circuit current shocks during grid connection; On the other hand, it integrates collaborative control functions and links with energy storage and reactive power compensation devices to achieve source-grid-load-storage scheduling. For example, when grid voltage fluctuates, the switchgear quickly adjusts reactive power output to maintain voltage stability and ensures the consumption of new energy.
Looking ahead
As the energy transition deepens, high-voltage switchgear will evolve toward being "smarter, more environmentally friendly, and more flexible." At the policy level, standards for SF6-free equipment and smart grids will be improved, and support for low-carbon technologies will be increased; On the technical side, AI and 5G will be deeply integrated to achieve precise prediction and remote control; At the application level, modularization and prefabrication have become mainstream, helping to efficiently build new power systems.
Energy transition policies provide a broad stage for innovation in high-voltage switchgear. The industry needs to closely follow guidance, break through technical bottlenecks, and provide solid support for a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient modern energy system.
