Growth in overseas demand is driving continuous growth in China's exports of high-voltage complete switchgear sets

As the core equipment in power system transmission and distribution, the export growth of high-voltage complete switchgear is closely linked to global power infrastructure construction and energy transition demands. In recent years, driven by power grid upgrades in emerging markets, expanding demand for renewable energy grid integration, and international policy cooperation, China's exports of high-voltage complete switchgear have continued to expand, becoming an important supply force in the global transmission and distribution equipment market.

1.Current Status and Scale of Export Growth

According to data from the Transmission and Transformation Branch of the China Electrical Equipment Industry Association, in 2023, China's export value of high-voltage complete switchgear was about 3.8 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 16%, maintaining double-digit growth for five consecutive years; Exports reached 125,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 12%. Its global market share rose from 18% in 2018 to 26% in 2023, making it one of the world's largest exporters. Export destinations cover more than 60 countries and regions including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Southeast Asia accounts for the largest share (about 35%), while the Middle East and Africa together account for 30%. The European market has the fastest growth (22% year-on-year growth in 2023).

2.Core Drivers of Overseas Demand Growth

1.Strong demand for infrastructure construction in emerging markets

Regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are experiencing rapid expansion of power infrastructure. To achieve the goal of "electrification for all by 2030," countries like Indonesia and Vietnam have continuously promoted grid upgrades. In 2023 alone, Vietnam planned 12 500kV substation projects, requiring large quantities of high-voltage switchgear procurement; Supporting transmission projects for new energy power stations in the Middle East (such as Saudi Arabia and UAE), as well as rural grid extension projects in African countries (such as Nigeria and Kenya), have driven demand for high-voltage switchgear.

2.Renewable energy grid integration is driving supporting demand

Global wind and photovoltaic installations are growing rapidly, with 300GW of new global renewable energy installations added in 2023, about 60% of which require supporting transmission and distribution equipment. As key equipment connecting new energy power plants to the grid, demand for high-voltage switchgear has risen as new energy projects expand. For example, in Europe, to achieve the goal of "carbon neutrality," it is vigorously promoting the integration of wind and photovoltaic power into the grid, significantly increasing demand for high-voltage switchgear with intelligent monitoring and low-loss characteristics; Large photovoltaic power station projects in Latin America have also become an important growth driver for China's switchgear exports.

3.Release of equipment upgrade demand in developed countries

In developed countries such as Europe and the United States, aging grid equipment is a prominent issue, with over 30% of transmission and distribution equipment having served for more than 20 years and urgently needing replacement. Due to mature technology and high cost-performance ratio, Chinese high-voltage switchgear has gradually entered the mid-to-high-end markets of Europe and America. For example, in distribution network upgrade projects in countries like Germany and Italy, Chinese companies have received orders for intelligent switchgear provided by Chinese companies that comply with the IEC 62271 standard and feature remote diagnostic capabilities.

4.Promotion of international cooperation policies

Under the Belt and Road Initiative, overseas power engineering projects involving Chinese companies (such as the Central Asia-China Transmission Corridor and the Malaysia-Lahore transmission project in Pakistan) directly drive switchgear exports. In addition, capacity cooperation agreements between China and ASEAN and African countries have lowered trade barriers and created favorable conditions for switchgear exports.

3.Distinctive Features of Export Growth

1.Product structure upgraded to mid-to-high-end

The proportion of intelligent switchgear exports increased from 25% in 2020 to 40% in 2023, with products featuring condition monitoring, fault warning, and remote control functions becoming mainstream. Some domestic companies have developed environmentally friendly switchgear (using SF6 as a gas substitute), which meets EU environmental standards and has rapidly increased their market share in Europe.

2.Diversified export markets

While traditional markets (Southeast Asia, Middle East) maintained steady growth, Europe and Latin America became new growth drivers. In 2023, exports to Europe grew by 22% year-on-year, and to Latin America by 18%, reflecting the growing recognition of Chinese products in the global market.

3.Accelerated integration of technical certification and standards

Domestic companies are placing increasing emphasis on international certifications. Over 80% of export companies have obtained certifications from IEC, UL, CE, and other international standards, and some have passed tests by authoritative organizations such as Germany's TüV and the United States' FM, breaking down technical barriers.

4.Challenges Faced

Despite strong export growth, multiple challenges remain: first, international trade barriers, such as anti-dumping investigations by some countries (in 2022, India initiated an anti-dumping case against Chinese switchgear); Second, raw material price fluctuations (rising copper and steel prices) squeeze profit margins; Third, international competition is intensifying, with companies like Siemens and ABB still holding advantages in the high-end market; Fourth, geopolitical risks, with conflicts in some regions causing project delays or cancellations.

5.Future Trend Outlook

In the future, China's exports of high-voltage complete switchgear will continue to grow: first, demand for intelligent and green products keeps rising, such as smart switchgear and SF6 replacing gas switchgear; Second, localized production will become a trend, with some companies already establishing assembly bases in Southeast Asia and Africa to reduce costs and avoid trade barriers; Third, increase investment in technology R&D, focusing on digital twins, IoT, and other technologies to enhance product competitiveness.

In summary, the continued growth in overseas demand provides broad opportunities for China's exports of high-voltage complete switchgear sets. Companies need to meet challenges and consolidate their global market position through technological innovation, market diversification, and localized layout.
